Our Patron and former President Kumar has been honoured at the annual Royal Society of Marine Artists Mall Galleries exhibition in London.
Not only has one of his submissions been chosen for the cover of the catalogue, he has taken one of the top awards: The Marine Quarterly “Sea from Seaward- Prize”. Not only that he is giving a demonstration there too. A real honour.
During a long and successful career as an orthopaedic surgeon – latterly at Blackpool Victoria Hospital – Kumar has always had watercolour painting as his stress-busting hobby.
His direct technique, which has been compared to that of the American artist Winslow Homer, has been inspired by painters of the past, notably, John Singer Sergeant, Edward Seago and John Yardley who was an early tutor.
We are fortunate that as a member of our Society we benefit from his ‘en plein air’ technique when he leads an enthusiastic group of outdoor sketchers and painters at local venues during the summer. He also teaches at residential courses.
Catch him at the final demonstration of the year in the Studio – Saturday, December 14.
Congratulations to Kumar and best wishes from all of us!
